Welcome to the new-look Skål UK News which, I hope, will be used by you, the membership of Skål UK, to help grow and promote your businesses. It will also bring you up to date with all the latest Skål-related news and initiatives from across the UK and, hopefully, the world of Skål International.
Please, please send me your news and your views for inclusion in this quarterly newsletter and use it to promote your businesses! Look below and you will see that we have included member websites and email addresses throughout – this is to facilitate and encourage Member to Member interaction so that we can learn from each other and, hopefully, work alongside each other.
Meanwhile, you will be pleased to hear that Skål, the world’s oldest and largest international network for tourism professionals isn’t standing still.
Two brand new membership categories, namely Medical Tourism and Sports Tourism have now been included in the Skål membership classifications and all clubs are asked to help recruit members in these high-growth sectors of the travel industry. Also, the new Young Skål website - www.youngskalnow.org - is now operational and HQ invites Young Skål members to submit the articles, photos, videos and, especially, social media content that are needed to bring this site to life – and to use it to develop their tourism careers. Skål International UK 63rd National Assembly, Belfast, Northern Ireland
22nd – 25th September 2016
Belfast is booming, so don’t delay in booking your rooms at either the Radisson Blu Belfast (Assembly Hotel) or the Park Inn by Radisson – its going to be a wonderful weekend, full of Irish hospitality, history and networking.
Thursday 22nd September is arrival day - in time for drinks and dinner at the Malone Golf Club house, a magnificent Tudor style building dating back to 1835
Friday 23rd September is all about business, including a meeting of the National Executive, Business to Business meetings, an evening reception with local food and drink providers (2016 is the Northern Ireland Year of Food and Drink) and dinner at the former Crumlin Road Gaol, now an extremely unusual events venue!
Saturday 24th September is a full day guided tour of Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway and the oldest Whiskey Distillery in the world at Old Bushmills, returning in time for a Gala Dinner at Radisson Blu Belfast.
Sunday 25th September is departure day and an opportunity to spend more time being a tourist in and around Belfast.
Meet Ken Sharp, President Skål International United Kingdom
The recently appointed President of Skål International UK is Ken Sharp, Managing Director of Triage Hospitality Ltd and the Salty Dog Hotel and Bistro in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Ken specialises in helping clients in the hospitality industry to improve their productivity, reduce costs and increase revenues and his career spans over twenty years in the hotel business, rising from Kitchen Porter to Marketing Director and including General Manager roles with several luxury hotels in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
After being awarded a BA Honours degree in Hotel and Catering Management from Strathclyde University, Ken worked for three years as part of the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace!
Ken also holds a Diploma from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust in 1999 and he then became a certified educator for the trust in 2008. He is also a certified Management Consultant with a client portfolio that includes the Carlton Hotel Group, Hanly Hotels, Lough Erne Golf Resort, Kinitty Castle, HotelREZ, Failte Ireland and Stapleford Park, to name but a few.
President Ken is especially keen to see and welcome as many members, friends and guests as possible to the Skål UK 63rd. Annual Assembly in Belfast this September and urges those with businesses to promote to reserve a desk and to play an active part in the business to business session during the afternoon of Friday 23 September.
Membership retention and acquisition is another priority activity highlighted by the President and the National Executive and full support will be given to Club Presidents and officers in this endeavour.

World Travel Market 2016 London: A Boost for Skål
WTM16 will take place at Excel from the 7th to the 9th November and, as usual, Skål UK will be hosting the Skål International Stand which will be organised by Skål London in partnership, this year, with member, JL Events.
If all goes to plan, this will be part of a new multinational agreement between Skål International and WTM’s Reed Travel Exhibitions that includes not just WTM but many other international exhibitions at which Skål Clubs around the world have a presence.
While the full Skål programme for this year’s WTM remains to be announced, plans are in progress for the introduction of a high level welcome dinner and reception for which sponsorship is being sought. So if you are interested in sponsoring the event or any other aspect of Skål at WTM please contact Paul Hoskins ASAP.
There will also be opportunities for Skål members to secure a greater presence and to promote their businesses from the Skål WTM’16 Stand. Emphasis on membership recruitment, including a programme to promote and attract new members to Skål is a key challenge for everyone.

Skål HQ: Toremolinas Slims Down (A Little)
Nigel Pilkington, President Skål International, has announced that the post of the Skål International Congress Coordinator will no longer be a full-time position and responsibility for the running of the annual World Congresses will henceforth be undertaken directly by the Local Organising Committee, effective 2017.
Responsibilities relating to the World Congress will be redistributed amongst the remaining HQ staff via Secretary General, Yvonne Mansell - email@example.com

Skål International is now active on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook and there are Skål administrators in different countries around the world who service and update Skål related social media activity.

Skål Club of the Year – Vote Now
Eligible Skål Clubs have now been informed re. the Skål ‘Club of the Year’ competition via their secretaries, including an invitation to vote on the candidate clubs worldwide (these presentations will also be formally evaluated by three members of the Executive Committee).

Mauritius: The ‘One Million Flowers‘ Project
Greening Mauritius is a two-year twinning agreement between Skål London on behalf of Skål UK and Skål Mauritius with the objective of introducing a host of natural and indigenous plants and the creation of year-round floral displays, turning it into “The Island of One Million Flowers’.
All of Mauritius’s, private and public sector organisations are being encouraged to help deliver the targeted one million new flowering plants and the first initiative is the planting of perennial flowers, shrubs and trees along the roads and motorways that connect Mauritius Airport to the North of the island, as well as the creation of roadside forests, jogging and walking trails that connect with nearby towns and villages.
Greening Mauritius LogoSkål Mauritius is a major stakeholder in ‘Greening Mauritius’ and it has already participated in the launching of three major projects including the Balison Motorway in the south of the island where it provided the landscaping design and donated over 1,800 shrubs, endemic plants and trees.
The second major project is a tree planting project along a new motorway between Ebene and to Terre Rouge – Verdun and the third scheme is the embellishment of the town of Wooton in the centre of Mauritius in partnership with the Mauritius Prison Service.
So far, Skål Mauritius has contributed up to over 3,000 plants to Greening Mauritius and it is inviting contributions to the Greening Mauritius Trust in order to raise funds both locally and internationally to continue the greening of this unique and precious island.
Greening Mauritius was launched by Ibrahim Ayoub, President of Skål Mauritius and our very own Anita Supos was in Mauritius for this event at the end of March 2016, during which time she visited the first plantation, attended tree planting programmes and helped promote awareness of the work of Skål London and Skål International.
Skål Southampton held a 'High Tea' event on Sunday 12th June 105 metres high on top of Portsmouth’s landmark Spinnaker Tower, hosted by Skål Southampton President, Dieter Schlieben, and brilliantly organised by Membre d'Honneur, John Bright.
Brighton Skål is organising a Tripartite event with Oxford and Southampton clubs on Sun. 14 August at McAlpines Private Railway and Gardens, Henley on Thames, Oxon. Times and cost TBA.

Skål Officers' Newsletter – Does The Secretary General Have Your Correct Address?
Skål HQ in Torremolinos recently had to re-send its ‘Officers Newsletter’ to all National Committees as the Statistic Report for the mailing shows that under half the 1177 recipients opened the email!
