Greetings from sunny Spain. High temperatures and no rain for months! This time last year it was snowing!

Back home after attending the National AGM in Reigate. It was excellent, both the Executive meeting in the morning and the National meeting in the afternoon with great participation from all the members.

One of the last duties of the National President is to award the Ken Maiden Trophy. This is awarded annually to the member who in the opinion of the President as shown the true spirit of Skål. This year it was awarded to Lyn Snelgrove, Brighton, Sussex and The Channel (me!!) I think it was one of the few times in my life I have been speechless. It was even more special to me as Ken was a founder member of Portsmouth and on his death his widow Betty donated money for something to remember Ken by. Janie Corbett who was National President and I as Vice President decided on this Presidential award.


A Message from President Alison to all UK Skålleagues

I feel very honoured to be your 2014 President and will work hard to create an atmosphere that will encourage not only retention of existing members, but also ensure we attract new members by living up to the Skål International Mission which is “To be the trusted voice in tourism and travel”.

With membership in any club or association come responsibilities. Our primary responsibility has to be to breathe new life into the UK clubs still in existence, and to work towards reinvigorating areas of the country where, sadly, clubs have gone into suspension. I think the biggest question clubs have to ask themselves is “Why would someone want to join our club and why would they want to stay a member?”

David Lord, our Immediate Past President, has left me with big shoes to fill when he threw down the gauntlet and asked the question “What is the way forward for Skål UK?” Please help us answer that question. Tell me what you want. You all have wonderful memories of what Skal has meant, or means, to you – pass on that passion. Set yourself a goal - to bring 1 new member into your club, or one of the other UK clubs, by the end of 2014. There is money in the National coffers for membership development. You are entitled to £4 per existing member towards hosting a “Discover Skål” event – USE IT.

I will endeavour to attend at least 1 event at each UK Club this year, and the bad news is, my term as President is for 2 years, so you will see me again in 2015.

I plan to attend the North American Area Skål Congress in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada April 30 – May 5, 2014 and the International Congress in Mexico City Oct.25 – 30, 2014. If there is anything I can do at either of these events that will encourage a business to business relationship between you and other Skal members, please let me know your message. I will be there representing, and promoting, the UK to our global tourism and travel colleagues. USE ME.

With bullying by Ian Hawkes, UK Skål First Vice-President and our esteemed, nay, revered, webmaster, I will be part of sharing what we are doing nationally – please do the same.

Our new President is Alison Partridge who already has started her visits to the clubs. President Alison will be in office for two years. Ian Hawkes is our new Vice President, a position he will hold for one year to enable our new member to the Executive Ken Sharpe (Northern Ireland) to get to know us all. John Watts was elected again as our National Treasurer (thank goodness). Our two new executive officers are Brian Donnelly (London) and Paul Hoskins (now London but ex Luton).

John Bright and Tony Milhofer serve again as Executive Officers. John continues with 200 Club and Tony with his invaluable experience with all matters to do with Travel. Lyn Snelgrove is still responsible for the Newsletter but is now Acting Secretary due to the continuing ill health of Sally Gray. David Lord is with us as Past President but Julian Bernstein decided not to stand for re-election. Thanks Julian for all you’ve done on the National Executive. We all look forward to a successful two years under the direction of President Alison.

The February draw took place during lunch on 7th February at Reigate Manor.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAT MARSH

(Brighton, Sussex and the Channel)

Pat celebrated her birthday last Sunday with family and friends at a lovely lunch held at a local Golf Club. It was an honour to share such a special occasion with friends from Pat’s life. We learned that Pat had just been awarded a lifetime achievement award from the British Hockey Association. The award from the International Association was a few years ago.


FORTHCOMING CLUB EVENTS

BRIGHTON, SUSSEX AND THE CHANNEL has two events coming up soon.
They are holding an Irish night with traditional music and fare – including Guinness on 17th March at the Landsdown Hotel, Eastbourne. Overnight accommodation is available at a very good Skål rate! Details from the Club

Their 75th Anniversary lunch is being held at Seattle Hotel, Brighton Marina on 13th April. Tickets are limited so if you want to celebrate with your Skålleagues contact the club.
