Greetings from a hot and sunny Spain. Extremely high temperatures so thank goodness for air con. Lot of visitors here so plenty of Fun in the Sun!
Contributions gratefully received for the next edition as always.
I hope you are all enjoying the Summer, it is going very quickly.
I have had a very busy time since our National Assembly in April. Straight after it, I attended the North American Area SKÅL Congress in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. There were some interesting meetings that addressed the problems of retention and recruitment of members, just as we are grappling with these concerns in the UK. They had a very interesting session on Social Media and to balance all that serious stuff – a surfeit of lobster!
In June I had a wonderful time attending two SKÅL events, one in Guernsey on the 6th and in Jersey on the 8th. In both cases I experienced the warmth and hospitality of the Islands. Thank you to Guernsey President Janie Corbett and Jersey President Martha Bernstein for their welcome. Both clubs have been successful in attracting new members and by the calibre of their events, I can see why. John Watts, National Treasurer, and I met before the dinner in the lovely Le Chéne Hotel in Guernsey to go over the National accounts. John is such a dedicated SKÅLLEAGUE – we owe him a big vote of thanks! On Jersey, Past President David Lord took me on a royal tour – a great Saturday afternoon, followed by a feast on Sunday prepared by the incomparable Past Past President Julian Bernstein. I was glad my flight was Monday morning and not Sunday night! It was great to meet the Clubs’ members and in the true spirit of SKÅL , do business among friends.
On to Belfast to celebrate their 60th Anniversary on June 20th. Joined by International President Karine Coulanges and her husband Alain, we did it all – Titanic; Falls Road; Shanklin and managed a superb celebratory lunch in the Ramada Plaza Hotel which just happens to be under the capable control of Northern Ireland SKÅL President Kathleen Lavery-Boulouha (see above far right). Also in the photo SKÅL Ireland President Nora Cronin (she has been an amazing supporter of UK Clubs events – Thank you Nora !) , myself and President Karine. Please note the SKÅL logo’d cupcakes.
Best regards to all,

Skål UK and Diversy / Sealedair
An exploratory meeting between Skål International partner Diversey/Sealed Air and Skål International on a National basis was held on 31st July with National President Alison, and London member Sebastian Checko present together with Katie Pett, Health Care and Hospitality Sector Marketing Manager for Diversey Care. The meeting discussed how we can foster the established partnership between Diversey and Skål on the shared concern for sustainability in the hospitality industry. The aims are to support Skål members through education in the field of sustainability and cleaning and hygiene, to create brand awareness, to socialise with members, and focus on SKÅL members in the hospitality industry. They wish to participate in Club events in the UK and Ireland, look at Charity projects, and perhaps provide sponsorship.....
MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS EXCITING INITIATIVE WILL BE DISCUSSED AT OUR SEPTEMBER 26 MEETING IN REIGATE – PLEASE MAKE THIS AN IMPORTANT DIARY DATE.
UK National Assembly 2015
Details of the 2015 Skål United Kingdom National weekend will be available at our September 26 meeting together with booking forms. This event will be held in Lincolnshire. The proposed venue of Blackpool was changed as further investigation found that the Lincolnshire option was far better value and the hotel more suitable for us.
Southampton member John Bright turned 70 in July and had a great surprise party organised by his two beautiful god-daughters Sarah and Bridget. The secret was very well kept for many months and I know that was difficult for many of us!!
It was a great evening with many friends and Skålleagues including Marianne Krohn our International Skål Vice President and her husband Tom. Thank you Dieter and Eileen for looking after me and making me feel, as you always do, so welcome in your home.
