PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Founders and Past Presidents Dinner 30 April

It was lovely to see a gathering of 15 Past Presidents, members and guests on 30 April and thank you to those able to make it.

I had a letter from PP Mike Buck expressing his deep sadness that ill health (and strong words from Pat) prevented him journeying to Dorchester for what would have been Founders dinner in his 40th year as a member but I think the decision was in your best interests Mike.  Your good wishes were passed on as requested.  In fact PP John Findlay expressed Mike’s apologies as endorsed by my letter.

Looking forward, I prompted some discussion over the future for the club and I have emailed or posted as appropriate these comments to local members.

June meeting

I also mentioned that following a straw poll at Southampton’s evening a couple of weeks ago, it became apparent that SI Oxford would not get the support we would need in terms of numbers to make a private Thames cruise financially viable this year.  The decision has therefore been taken to arrange a more informal dinner later in June and Jenny will be in touch with the details in due course.

Three Clubs 14 August

A date for your diary is 14 August for the Three Clubs meeting.  This is being organised by Martin Hayley of SI Brighton but on our patch in Henley!  We will gather at Sir William McAlpine’s private estate at Fawley Hill (www.fawleyhill.co.uk).  This has a private steam railway, fairground and other attractions for a great day out.  I believe the plan is for no organised Skal activity save what is provided at the venue.  BYO picnic and just £12 to cover admission.  Free for the under 10s so an ideal opportunity to bring the family.  On this note, we will require an early idea of numbers so as to gauge the required allocation.  Please respond to Jenny now who will liaise with Martin, the co-ordinator.

That’s all for now folks and I hope that we will see you in June.

Skal, Ian
