National President - John BrightJohn Bright

John has been a member of the National Executive since 1994, and UK International Councillor from 2002 retiring in 2009.

Awarded the Ken Maiden, Spirit of Skål Award by outgoing President Mark for his work for Skål both in the UK and on the International Scene in January 2009.

 

He was then elected as National President at the 2010 AGM.

John works for part time for Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries, Gunwharf, Portsmouth PO1 2LA in the shadow of HMS Victory

1st Vice President - Ian HawkesIan Hawkes

Ian joined the National Executive in January 2009.

He has over 31 years experience in travel industry sales and marketing having worked for BOAC, Qantas and latterly AB Airlines. His managerial experience includes both UK and European sales and marketing responsibilities with particular emphasis on advertising, pricing and promotion.

As managing director of affiliate, Core Marketing Ltd, he is the Executive Director of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) UK Chapter and provides the secretariat services for the AAC. 

2nd Vice President - Julian Bernstein

Joined the National Executive at the 2010 AGM

I am a retired Hotelier and Restaurateur with 40 years of Jersey and International experience.

 I joined Skål in the 1980s and have been a council member most of the time. I am in the middle of my second two year term of Presidency of the Jersey club.

I am fortunate to have been on many National and International Congresses including the most recent one in Budapest. In addition I travelled to Paris last April to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of Skål.
During my working life I have also been a Deputy in the States of Jersey Parliament. I have been on Educational Governing Boards as well as on the committee of many local charities and Arts Foundations. I am also involved (in a non uniformed way!) with the Scout Association here in Jersey.
My wife Martha is a former Skal member and we have 2 sons aged 17 and 14 as well as 2 miniature Dachshunds. I am extremely fortunate that the family are all very supportive of me and my involvement with Skål.

Immediate Past President - Tony BennettTony Bennett

Tony was elected National President at the 2009 AGM following a long career in the travel industry which he joined in 1959.

Started with Pan American World Airways as a Telephone Sales assistant. He was trained to answer questions members of the public and/or Pan American passengers asked concerning their travel arrangements. Based at the UK Head office at 193 Piccadilly, London where he worked for two years. Moved back to his home town of Colchester and joined the local retail travel business, G Powell & Co as Manager. Still based in Colchester all these years later, and is an Australian and Kiwi Specialist, offering specialist tours to those countries and around the world.

In 1963 joined the Skål Club of Cambridge and East Anglia, where he has been Club Treasurer and President in 1969, 1979. 1998, 2005 and 2006. Has enjoyed the International Congress in Abidjan (1969), Berlin (1979) Montreal (1998) Croatia (2005) Antalya (2007) and more recently Taipei in 2008. Has also attended the Irish National’s and many UK Assemblies, including organising the 1963 and 2005 assemblies in Cambridge.

His wife Christine is Club Vice President, and daughter Lisa, Past Secretary. 

Secretary - Sally GraySally Gray

Sally joined Skål in Bournemouth in 1976, transferring to Brighton in 1980.

 Currently Vice President of Brighton & Sussex, having previously been President in 1986.

Joined the National Executive as Secretary in April 2008, following the death of her husband Stuart, the previous incumbent.

Treasurer - David Goddard

David, is a long standing member of the Executive of Skål UK, and re-elected at the 2010 AGM

Webmaster - Peter SteenPeter Steen

Having done so much work to establish this website in the fore front of the future of communications for the whole of the Skål movement, Peter joined the National Executive in January 2003.

Peter joined Skål in 1993 when the Lake District club was formed, and has served as Secretary and President, of this the youngest club in Skål UK

Worked for Trust Houses Forte, and held many senior hotel management positions in a number of hotels.

Currently works at Kendal College assisting lecturers deliver their lectures working closely with special needs students.

Also works for AWOL, a local Catering Agency, doing relief work in many kitchen throughout Cumbria and beyond.

Executive Officer - Tony MilhoferTony Milhofer

Past President of London and UK National, holding the portfolios of Membership Development and Transport Officer

Runs a family business specialising in groups, tailor-made holidays, cruises and is an Aussie specialist. Holds two ABTA licences as a retail travel agent and as a tour organiser.

Well known for garden theme tours throughout Europe and will give 10% discount to Skål members. 

Executive Officer - Maurice SteerMaurice Steer

Started in the travel industry with the Polytechnic Touring Association in 1954 and spent the first 30 years of my career in the retail, business and tour operating sectors. In the mid 1980’s, I changed direction and entered the field of education as a lecturer in travel and tourism. In 1994. I returned to tour operating and set up my own company to provide sales and product training for a number of specialist operators. including All Canada Holidays and Elite Vacations.

I joined the Skål Club of Cambridge & East Anglia in 1969 and was elected to the committee in 1971. I served on the committee for 25 years most of which as either President (3 times), Secretary, Treasurer and/or National Delegate and in the mid 1980’s, I was co-opted on to the National Executive with the brief to re-write the National Rules. During these years, I attended numerous National Assemblies and several International Congresses. For a number of personal reasons, I left Skål at the end of 2000 and re-joined the Cambridge & East Anglia club in 2007. In 2008 I was elected Vice-President of that club and also elected on to the National Executive Committee.

International Councillor - Paul FollowsPaul Follows

Elected to National President for 2007, Paul has many exciting ideas to take Skål in the UK forward for the future. In 2009 he was elected International Councillor.

At the National AGM in January 2010, took on the dual roles of Membership Development and PR

 He has developed the Skål Graduate of the Year Award., and hopes to take this forward in time.

Paul was born and schooled in Stafford United Kingdom and gained his Final Membership qualification of the now renamed Institute of Hospitality, at Birmingham University for Hospitality and Tourism.

Having trained under a Swiss General Manager and Executive Chef at a top four star spa hotel in Droitwich, Paul embarked on a career in established quality corporate hotels. He joined Thistle Hotels as Banqueting Manager of the Gosforth Park Hotel the top Egon Ronay rated hotel in Northern England. Within two years he was promoted to Deputy General Manager and was later seconded to a newly acquired Thistle Hotel at Gatwick Airport to assist the General Manager in bringing the hotel up to Thistle four star standard.

Later he transferred to Thistle’s Manchester hotel with the objective of raising standards of operation. Within eighteen months he was given the General Manager reigns and during the five years as General Manager he perfected his natural flair for sales and marketing moving the hotel into number one spot as the most profitable hotel within the group.

Moving into London he ran a number of small group of independent hotels including the famous Great Western Hotel at Paddington Station (now Hilton).

He moved to Grim’s Dyke Hotel a country house hotel in Harrow, North/West London as General Manager and after four years left for a similar type establishment in North London being given the job of moving the hotel into a higher quality market sector.

Paul was recruited three years later and persuaded to return to Grim’s Dyke as General Manager and later Director. The historical links of the hotel were perfect for Paul’s creative marketing mind. In ten years Paul made Grim’s Dyke an industry renowned name for quality, winning Visit London Best Small Hotel 2004, London in Bloom winner plus UK Inbound’s UK Hotel of the Year for 2006 and recently Visit London’s Best Tourism Experience 2007. Locally the rosette awarded restaurant is considered one of the best in a very competitive market. His motivation is making an idea work, making it pay and doing it in style.

Paul is involved with the London Development Agency where he is presently Chairman of the West London Tourism Executive and Marketing Group and a member of the Industry Committee for the British Hospitality Association. He is a Past UK President of Skål International the World Wide Travel and Tourism Association.

His interests include dog showing/judging where he is now an international show judge and booked to judge at Cruft’s the world’s largest and most prestigious show in 2011.

Paul lives in East Sussex and is married to Susan and has two children Amy 26 and Greg 24.
